Meet the Cast of "Looking for Alaska" and the Characters They Play
To print the story please do so via the link in the story toolbar. Miles decides that he wants to leave home before his junior year of high school and says that he wants to attend Culver Creek Boarding School like his father did at his age.
When his parents asked why he wanted to go, he said that he was going to "seek a Great Perhaps". After moving into his dorm, Miles meets his roommate, Chip Martin. Chip then announces that Miles will call him the Colonel and then decides to give Miles the nickname "Pudge" which is ironic because Miles is extremely skinny and scrawny. The nicknames stick for the duration of the novel. The Colonel introduces Pudge to Alaska when they go to her dorm room to buy cigarettes. Pudge is immediately infatuated with Alaska but then finds out that she has a boyfriend that she is very much in love with.
Pudge is grabbed from his bed in the middle of the night and led to the lake on campus. He is tapped up around his legs, his torso, and around his mouth and thrown into the lake. Once Pudge manages to get to shore and loosen the tape he goes to the Colonel. He then promises miles to get back at the hasers. Pudge wants to tell The Eagle the dean of Culver Creek but the Colonel refuses because no one is supposed to snitch no matter what. Pudge and Takumi don't get in trouble because Alaska and the Colonel take the fall.
Alaska tells Pudge that she found a girlfriend for him. Her name is Lara and she plans a triple- and a half date with Alaska and her boyfriend, the Colonel and his girlfriend, Miles and Lara, and Takumi who just tags along. The date went terribly and by the end the Colonel's girlfriend breaks up with him.
Alaska convinces Pudge to stay on campus for thanksgiving break. Desperate for alone time with her, her agrees. Pudge wants to tell Alaska that he is in love with her, yet he doesn't.
Instead, he tries to kiss her but she stops him and tells him not to ruin it. Alaska tells the story of how her mom dies of an aneurysm. She thinks that her dad blames her for the death of her mom because instead of calling , she sat, screaming and crying with her mom.
It seems as though Alaska blames herself too. Alaska wants to play truth or dare with her friends. She dares Pudge to make out with her, so he does.
As Alaska falls asleep, Pudge admits that he is in love with her. The payphone in the hall rings and Alaska answers it. She comes back to the room sobbing and says that Pudge and the Colonel needs to distract the Eagle so she can go somewhere with her car. She said that she had forgotten something and hat she messed up.
The Eagle gathers everyone in the Gym. He then says that "Alaska Young was in a terrible accident And she was killed. Alaska has passed away" Green The gym is silent and Pudge runs out of the gym and tries to throw up. He can't face the reality of her death and tries to convince himself that it is all a prank.
On the way to the funeral, Pudge breaks down and cries for the first time since Alaska died. Pudge insists that he still loves Alaska even though she is dead. The Colonel thinks that Alaska may have committed suicide and tries to figure out what the phone call was about right before she left.
Pudge and the Colonel going to the police station to try and find out what happened to Alaska. The cop that was on the scene tells them that she didn't use her brakes at all, she just hit the other car at full speed. He also tells them that there were white tulips in the back seat. The colonel says that Alaska's parents had always put white tulips in her hair when she was younger. After talking to Jake Alaska's boyfriend they rule out the though out suicide because they think that she was planning for a future.
Takumi tells Pudge that Alaska died that day after her mom. Takumi, Pudge, and the Colonel believe that when Alaska died it was because she realized that it was the anniversary of her mom's death and rushed to her mom's grave. They still don't know for sure whether it was an accident of suicide. The group of friends decide to give up with the investigation of Alaska's death.
Pudge and the Colonel cry one last time. Pudge finds a note from Takumi saying that he saw Alaska the night she died and that he let her go too. In the end Pudge realized that one day he will forget Alaska, and that she will forgive him for that.
