Sequoia Capital doubles the size of its women’s leadership program in Silicon Valley

Quietly, for the past year, Sequoia Capital has run a leadership program in Silicon Valley designed to pair rising female leaders with mentors, Fortune reports. The Ascent program reportedly accepted 50 women last year, and will accept when the next cohort begins later this week. Participants access customized learning content on Everwise's online platform and attend in-person networking and professional development events.

Beyond one-on-one sessions with volunteer mentors, there are also group learning activities, workshops, fireside chats and software with structured content. Everwise did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The program comes as Silicon Valley grapples with a series of high-profile cases of sexism and discrimination against women. Earlier this month, a male Google engineer was fired for writing a memo that argued, among other things, that women were biologically ill-suited for software engineering.

Venture capitalists Dave McClure and Justin Caldbeck both resigned after admitting they preyed on female founders. Before that, former Uber Technologies engineer Susan Fowler penned a widely-read memo about sexism in the company that ultimately led the ouster of its founding CEO.

Sequoia Capital itself has been accused of not including enough women in its ranks. The firm hired its first female investing partner in the U.
