Some sources believe that it is merely a reference to a young bird that is just learning to fly for the first time and so flaps its wings. After World War I, the flapper generally represented a lewd and disreputable woman who consistently flouted the conventions of society at the time of the s. The image of the flapper was that of a young woman who frequented jazz clubs at night to dance provocatively, smoke cigarettes, and date men indiscriminately. Other activities they indulged in were driving cars, riding bicycles, and defied Prohibition by openly drinking alcohol. These women also were fond of holding petting parties, where making out and forms of foreplay were popular and also the main event. The image of the flapper was something of a direct result of the popular disgust among Americans at the Prohibition laws.

Flappers of the s were young women known for their energetic freedom, embracing a lifestyle viewed by many at the time as outrageous, immoral or downright dangerous. Now considered the first generation of independent American women, flappers pushed barriers in economic, political and sexual freedom for women. Multiple factors—political, cultural and technological—led to the rise of the flappers. During World War I , women entered the workforce in large numbers, receiving higher wages that many working women were not inclined to give up during peacetime. The s also brought about Prohibition , the result of the 18th Amendment ending legal alcohol sales. Combined with an explosion of popularity for jazz music and jazz clubs, the stage was set for speakeasies, which offered illegally produced and distributed alcohol. Many people, a number of them young women, drove these cars into cities, which experienced a population boom. With all these pieces in place, an unprecedented social explosion for young women was all but inevitable. No one knows how the word flapper entered American slang, but its usage first appeared just following World War I.

Flappers were a generation of young Western women in the s who wore short skirts just at the knee was short for that time period , bobbed their hair, listened to jazz , and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes in public, driving automobiles, treating sex in a casual manner , and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. However, there was a reaction to this counter culture, mostly by older, more conservative people who belonged in different generations. They claimed that the flappers' dresses were 'near nakedness', 'flippant', 'reckless', and unintelligent. The slang term "flapper" may derive from an earlier use in northern England to mean "teenage girl", referring to one whose hair is not yet put up and whose plaited pigtail "flapped" on her back, [3] or from an older word meaning "prostitute". The standard non-slang usage appeared in print as early as in England and in the United States, when novelist Desmond Coke used it in his college story of Oxford life, Sandford of Merton : "There's a stunning flapper". This move became quite a competitive dance during this era.
