It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.
Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file a reminder of this book's long journey from the publisher to a library and finally to you. Usage guidelines Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible.
Public domain books belong to the public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying. We encourage the use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help. Please do not remove it. Do not assume that just because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other countries.
Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liability can be quite severe.
About Google Book Search Google's mission is to organize the world's information and to make it universally accessible and useful. Google Book Search helps readers discover the world's books while helping authors and publishers reach new audiences. PECK, Ph. Copyright, , by William G. There is a growing belief among educators that our text books contain a great deal of matter which is not essential, either to continuity or to completeness, and that they are to this extent oyercrowded and unnecessarily voluminous.
The desire for condensed, but not emasculated, books is well expressed by an eminent authority in educational matters who says : " Small textbooks, containing only the essentials of the subjects treated of — only those parts that have life in them, parts that cannot be eliminated without leaving the subjects imperfect — are rare.
The present series is designed to meet this demand by furnishing a set of books, embracing within moderate limits every mathematical principle necessary to the fullest academic, or technical iV PREFACE. Commencing with the simplest ideas of num ber, the successive volumes conduct the student by easy gradation through all the essential principles of Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Analytics, and the Calculus. The entire course is treated as a unit, each part being adapted to all the others, and all the parts being so arranged as to form a symmetrical whole.
Thb Cibcle, Aim the Meabubb of Abglbs Plaiteb, and Anoi. Introduction I. If two surfiaces intersect, or cut each other, that which is common to both is called a line ; if two lines intersect, that which is common to both is called a point. General Definitions. A magnitude is anything that can be measured, that is, whose value can be expressed in terms of some thing of the same kind, taken as a unit. A point is that which has position, but no magnitude.
A line is that which has length, without breadth or thickness. A volume is that which has length, breadth, and thickness. Straight Lines and Curved Lines. A straight line is a line whose direction does not change at any point; thus, AC is a. It is assumed that one flrtfalglit line, and only one, can be drawn through any two points, 8. Planes and Cunred Surfaces. A plane is a surface such that a straight line through any two of its points Ues wholly in the surface.
Generation of Lines and Surfaces. The law of generation determines the kind of lines generated. If a line moves through space in accordance with a fixed law it is said to generate a surface ; the moving line is the generatrix, and the law which governs its motion is the law of generation. Definition and Division of the Subject Lines, surfaces, volumes, and angles are called geo metrical magnitudes. Qeometiy is that branch of mathematics which treats of the properties and relations of geometrical mag nitudes.
Geometry is diyided into two parts: geometry of two dimensions, or plane geometry, in which the mag nitudes considered lie in the same plane; and geometry of three dimensions in which the magnitudes considered do not lie in the same plane.
All the magnitudes oonsideied in the first five books are supposed to lie in the same plane. Definitions of Terms. A theorem is an assertion whose truth is to be proved; the reasoning employed in making the proof is called a demonstration. A problem is a question proposed, requiring an answer ; the operation of finding the answer is called a solution.
Both theorems and problems are called propositions. An axiom is an assertion whose truth is universally admitted. A postulate is a problem whose solution is taken for granted. A corollary is an obvious consequence of one or more propositions, A scholium is an explanatory remark made with refer ence to one or more preceding propositions. An hypothesis is a supposition made either in the enunciation of a proposition or in the course of a demonstration. The following are some of the most important axioms and postulates.
Things equal to the same thing are equal to each other. If equals are added to equals, the sums are equal. If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal. If equals are multiplied by equals, the products are equal. If equals are divided by equals, the quotients are equal.
The whole is greater than any of its parts. The whole is equal to the sum of all its parts. A straight line is the shortest path between two points. A straight line can be prolonged to any extent.
A straight line can be constructed equal to a given straight line. A straight line can be bisected, that is, divided into two equal parts. An angle can be constructed equal to a given angle.
An angle can be bisected. The signs and methods of notation used in Algebra are also employed in Geometry. The vinculum and the parenthesis are used to connect quantities that are to be operated on as a single quantity; coefficients are used to denote multiples; and exponents to denote powers. In addition to these methods of denotation, geometrical magni tudes are represented by pictorial symbols, called geometrical figures, in which points and lines are designated by letters placed so as to be convenient for reference.
Note, — In the references throoghoat this work, P. In referring to subjects in the same book the number of the book is not given. BOOK I. Generation and Classification of Angles. An angle may be generaiied by a line reTolying about one of its points in the same manner that one leg of a pair of compasses tnms about the hinge. Thus, if we suppose 00 to start from the position OA and to revolve about in the direction indicated Q by the arrow, it will generate an angle AOO, whose magnitude will obviously depend on the amount of turning, and not at all on the length of In this explanation we only consider that part of the revolv ing line which lies on one side of the vertex ; if we suppose the line to be prolonged through the vertex, the prolongation may be regarded as a second line lying in an opposite direc tion.
If a line DO meets a second line PA so as to form two angles, these angles are said to be adjacent. If the adjacent angles are equal, each A is called a right angle, and the first line is said to be perpendicular to BOOK I. An acute angle is one that is less than a right angle ; an obtuse angle is one that is greater than a right angle : thus, AOC is acutey and COP is obtuse.
If two lines intersect, that is, cross each other, they form four angles about the point of intersection. Those that lie on the same side of one line and on opposite sides of the other are called adjacent, and those that he on opposite sides of both are called opposite, or vertical angles: thus, AOC, OOP, are adjacenty and AOO, POQ, are opposite angles. Any one of the four angles about O has two adjacent angles and one opposite angle.
Proposition I. If two lines intersecty the opposite angles which they form are equal. Proposition II. Let PA be the given line and the given point. Suppose a line OC to start from the position OA and to revolve about in the indicated direc tion. At the beginning of the motion, AOC is less than COP; as the motion progresses AOC increases, COP decreases, and their difference continually diminishes, until the revolving line comes to some position, OD, in which the two angles are equal ; after passing this position the first angle becomes greater than the second, and their difference continually increases till the revolving line comes to the position OP : there is therefore one position of the revolving line, and but one, in which the two angles are equal.
Hence, there is one perpendicular to PA at 0, and only one, which was to be proved. For, from P. V : hence, OQ is perpendicular to PA. If one of the four angles formed by two lines that intersect is a right angle, the other three are right angles and the two lines are mutually perpendicular to each other. A right angle is an angle that may be generated by a line OC in revolving through a quarter of a complete revo lution ; hence, all right angles are equal.
Proposition III. The sum of the adjacent angles formed by one line meeting another is eqiml to two right angles.

Psychiatry has made significant advances in the last century. The use of pharmacological medication to treat mental disorders, refinements in psychological therapies, insights into the genetic, and biological basis and advances in operational diagnosis and classification have changed practice. However, the role of psychosocial stress and the relationship between psychosocial adversity and psychiatric diagnosis remains controversial. This article highlights the challenges and suggests possible solutions. Suicide is a classical outcome of both psychosocial adversity and of mental illness. Psychosocial adversity causes mental distress and psychiatric disorders disease. Such trauma can be acute E.
